Walt Frazier, or "Clyde," as many of his colleagues and fans came to know him, is one of the best professional basketball players from the late 1960s and early '70s. Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Frazier left his hometown for the opportunity to play basketball at Southern Illinois University, where he led the team to the 1967 National Invitation Tournament championship. He was named the tournament's most valuable player and was also named to the Division II All-American team.
That same year, Frazier was the first-round draft choice for the New York Knicks and became the first guard ever to lead the team in scoring. Just three seasons later, he helped the Knicks win their first NBA title during the last game of the series against the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 36 points and making 19 assists. In 1973, Frazier's determination and teamwork were once again influential in securing a second NBA title for the Knicks. He was traded from the Knicks in 1977 and spent the final two seasons of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
During his impressive NBA career, Frazier was a first-team All-Star four times and was named to the NBA's all-defensive first team seven years in a row, from 1969-1975. He scored 15,581 points and made 5,040 assists in 825 regular season games. Frazier was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 and named one of the NBA's 50 greatest players in 1996.
Following his retirement as a player, Frazier made another successful career for himself as an award-winning television analyst on Knicks broadcasts, in which he would entertain fans with rhyming phrases and words that came to be known as "Clyde-isms." In 1992 and again in 1996, he was part of the MSG Network Knicks team that won the New York Emmy award for "Outstanding Live Sports Coverage."
Frazier's success extends past sports, as well. As a leader and role model, he felt it was important to create the Walt Frazier Youth Foundation, a charity which helps talented and dedicated students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds discover and experience the world of work. In his commitment to helping youth expand their vision of the future, Frazier has even authored a book,
